Function


Computer scientists research and develop technology that addresses complicated business problems and scientific needs. Education


According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), most computer science jobs in the United States require a Ph.D in computer science, computer engineering or major in a related field. Some federal government jobs will accept computer science professionals with just a bachelor's degree in a computer- or technology-related discipline. Coursework in a bachelor of computer science program should cover technical math, algorithms, software development, database management and computer science theory.





Skills


Professionals in the computer science technology field must think creatively and logically when creating software applications and other technologies. They must have excellent math, multi-tasking and problem-solving skills. Though computer scientists work independently, they must be able to work well with people and communicate with programmers, managers and other technical staff on a regular basis.





Job Titles


The computer science technology field is broad and offers a variety of roles for database administrators, computer scientists and analysts. According to the BLS, the median salary for computer and information science professionals was $97,970 as of May 2008. Professionals in the lowest 10th percentile earned $57,480, and professionals in the highest 10th percentile earned $151,250.





Potential


The BLS projects that job prospects will be excellent for computer science professionals over the next decade. During the 2008 to 2018 decade, the number of jobs for computer science professionals is expected to grow by 24 percent. The BLS attributes this growth to the rapid expansion of software technology such as desktop publishing and information security. Engineering and computer science Ph.D. graduates will have the best job opportunities as current workers exit the sector or transition to other occupations.
